Homeowner checklist
- Confirm you are in Energy Trust territory for an electric HPWH incentive (utility combo matters).
- Choose contractor midstream (~$1,200) or in-store DIY discount (~$1,000) — miss the instant path and you generally cannot file later.
- Confirm Tier 3+ on NEEA-rated list. See models checklist.
- Existing home only — not new construction.
- Contractor path: use a licensed contractor who buys through an eligible distributor so the discount hits your bid.
- DIY path: buy in-store at a listed participating retailer; get permits; hire licensed help for electrical/plumbing if needed.
- Keep the receipt showing the discounted price in your paperwork folder even though there is no mail-in form for HPWH midstream.
Hire licensed when required
Contractor path requires a licensed contractor. DIY still needs code-compliant plumbing and electrical — hire licensed trades when you are not authorized to do the work. Energy Trust tips pages are not a substitute for permits.
